The Tassie Tuna Grand Slam. All four species captured in one day. These fish were taken on 1st March 2008. Picture shows from left to right a 20kg Albacore, a nice Yellowfin Tuna in excess of 50kg, and a Southern Bluefin Tuna around 30kg. Also in photo is a Striped Tuna detailing the size comparison. All fish were captured close to Hippolyte Rocks.

(Top) Big Tasmanian Southern Bluefin Tuna. These big Bluefin Frequent these waters and experienced anglers come from all parts of the world to experience the opportuntiy to do battle with one of these prized tuna. This fish was around 90kg.

(Bottom) Two big Yellowfin Tuna taken at Hippolite Rocks, South of Pirates Bay in March 2007. These rocks and reef systems are a favourite feeding ground for all tuna species. These fish were taken on 24kg line and proved to be a handfull. The fish on the right put up a 4 hour and 10 minute fight before being landed.

The area is well known for its prized large Southern Bluefin Tuna, as well as massive Mako sharks. Yellowfin Tuna are present along with an abundance of Albacore Tuna, and the occasional Striped Marlin inhabit the waters feeding on striped Tuna and Mackeral. The area is rich in baitfish schools providing the perfect feeding ground for these big predator species.
